Mahershala Ali and director Bassam Tariq escaped Marvel's troubled Blade reboot to deliver Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother at TIFF.
Two-time Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali and Pakistani-American filmmaker Bassam Tariq transformed the high-profile collapse of Marvel Studios' Blade reboot into an artistic triumph with their new thriller, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother. Premiering to widespread acclaim at the Toronto International Film Festival, the hitman drama demonstrates how creative independence can yield far superior cinematic results than corporate superhero franchises burdened by studio interference.
When Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige invited Mahershala Ali onto the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2019 to announce a fresh incarnation of Blade, the comic book movie industry anticipated a milestone project. In 2021, Disney recruited Karachi-born filmmaker Bassam Tariq to direct. Tariq had earned international praise for his indie feature Mogul Mowgli starring Riz Ahmed, as well as his acclaimed documentary These Birds Walk, filmed on location in Karachi focusing on youth shelter home run by Abdul Sattar Edhi.
However, the corporate studio machinery rapidly bogged down the production. Marvel put the project through continuous script overhauls, cycling through at least five different screenwriters including Stacy Osei-Kuffour, Beau DeMayo, Nic Pizzolatto, and Michael Green. Repeated production delays, shifting release dates, and creative clashes over action sequences eventually led to Tariq departing the director's chair. Marvel's attempt to force an Oscar-winning actor and a boundary-pushing indie director into a rigid franchise mold stalled completely.
Rather than letting their creative partnership disintegrate alongside the studio deal, Ali and Tariq redirected their kinetic energy toward an original independent production. Operating largely away from Hollywood trade headlines, the duo shot Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother—a dark, claustrophobic hitman thriller that premiered during the third day of the Toronto International Film Festival.
The film abandons CGI spectacles and universe-building teasers in favor of precise tension, brutal character study, and atmospheric dread. Ali plays an aging assassin operating on the fringes of international organized crime, grappling with severe psychological exhaustion and complex familial loyalty. Tariq directs with the raw, documentary-style intimacy that defined his early work, capturing the physical weight of violence rather than stylized heroics. festival audiences reacted with standing ovations, praising the film as one of the standout thrillers of the year.
The success of Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother highlights a broader structural movement across the global film industry. Audience fatigue with multi-billion-dollar superhero universes has forced studios to reckon with formulaic storytelling, while character-driven thrillers are regaining momentum at major global festivals. For Tariq, who spent his early years moving between Karachi and Houston, choosing authorial control over a massive Disney budget establishes his position among the top tier of international directors.
South Asian filmmakers operating in Hollywood have historically faced pressure to conform to established studio franchises to secure major budgets. Tariq’s choice to prioritize artistic integrity alongside an actor of Ali’s stature establishes a compelling precedent for diaspora storytellers. The film proves that high-stakes storytelling relies on bold vision and uncompromising character depth rather than established comic book intellectual property.
Bassam Tariq departed Marvel's Blade following repeated script rewrites, production delays, and studio interference over creative direction. Instead of waiting on studio approvals, he partnered directly with star Mahershala Ali on an independent project.
The film is an intense, psychological hitman thriller following an aging assassin struggling with trauma and family legacy. It premiered on the third day of the Toronto International Film Festival to critical acclaim.
Bassam Tariq previously directed the acclaimed indie drama Mogul Mowgli starring Riz Ahmed and co-directed the award-winning Karachi documentary These Birds Walk. Both projects brought him international recognition before his Hollywood pivot.
